Veteran Identification & Recognition

The Descendant Community’s Veteran Identification & Recognition project locates unrecognized veterans buried in the Milwaukee County Grounds cemeteries and facilitates the submission of applications to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for memorial markers. By ensuring veterans receive formal recognition, this project honors their service and provides closure to their descendants.

Online Memorials

In 2023, we launched our online veteran memorials to honor veterans whose stories had long been overlooked. Each memorial provides detailed information about a veteran’s life, military service, significant events, and burial, often accompanied by photographs of headstones and memorial services. Visitors can explore these histories to learn about the veterans’ contributions and the recognition they received posthumously.
