Explore the dedicated efforts of the Descendant Community to preserve and honor the history of those interred at the Milwaukee County Grounds Cemeteries. From the dignified reburial of ancestors and recognition of veterans to genealogical research and memorial creation, our projects aim to restore dignity, preserve heritage, and celebrate the lives of those once buried here. Each initiative is guided by our commitment to respecting historical significance and supporting the community connected to these historic burial sites.
Milwaukee County Grounds Reburial Project
The Milwaukee County Grounds Reburial Project aims to ensure the dignified reburial of 831 ancestors exhumed in 2013 from the Milwaukee County Grounds Cemetery 2. In collaboration with community partners and supported by a final decision from the Wisconsin Historical Society, this project will transfer the remains to Forest Home Cemetery, with reburials expected to be completed by September 2025. This initiative restores dignity and respect to those ancestors, many of whom were marginalized in life.

Veteran Identification & Recognition
The Descendant Community’s Veteran Identification and Recognition project locates unrecognized veterans hidden in the cemetery burial ledger to facilitate the procurement and installation of headstones, ensuring meaningful recognition for veterans and their families on Veterans Day. This effort provides support and services to families of deceased veterans once buried in any of the four County Grounds cemeteries.
We are also working to create online memorials for the veterans

County Grounds Cemeteries Genealogy Initiative
The Descendant Community’s Genealogy Initiative conducts thorough genealogical research, updating Find-a-Grave memorials and contacting relatives to connect the life stories of those buried at Milwaukee County Grounds. We prioritize informing living descendants about their Ancestors’ burial status and offer support, resources, and historical understanding. We respect personal wishes regarding engagement and invite participation in our projects and events. This effort provides exceptional support and services to families of those once buried in any of the four County Grounds cemeteries.
